The Road to Zion

Zion National Park!!! Not the road to Emmaus!! That is in PA!!! Down near Bethlehem : )

Anyway, I was a bit distracted driving up to Zion Utah from Flagstaff AZ!! The plan was to leave AZ in the AM and be up to Zion by lunch....Well the best laid plans.... I found a national monument called Sunset Crater on my way up the road.. I took a little hike through the 1000 year old lava fields and then a drive through the painted desert to some of the old pueblo homes....then finally made my way up past the marble cliffs into UTAH and made it to ZION right at Sunset!! PERFECT timing!! I even made a dinner reservation at the park lodge!!

I drove Rt 66 through Flagstaff AZ!! I think that is the fourth state now that I drove on rt 66. IL and MO with Dad last year and NM last month!!

Wonder what made me stay here??? I pulled in at night and didn't see the sign until morning...at least there was no train noise!!

Kokopellis normally play flutes!! This was on a guitar store wall!!

1000 year old Lava flows in Arizona!! Whoda thunk it??

A short hike around the crater. They won't let you climb it anymore. Too much erosion.

Maybe this is what they meant by martians?? This poor tree!!!
It looks like something out of men in black!!

A big air pocket in the lava that has broken open and been exposed through time.

AM I on the moon?? Oh maybe that is what the hotel sign was referring to??

Remember the pit houses from Mesa Verde?? This is one they found buried under the lava!!

Like they need to tell me that!! I am looking at road cuts and rocks all the time... Only there were little tiny sharp rocks in the road...and with my tire track record lately I was a bit concerned!!

Arriving at Zion National Park as the sunset!!!
