Yes there is a road in Utah called Hells Backbone and I know why!! Thank the Lord I was driving it during daylight hours! I was driving this ridge overlooking these gorgeous canyons that I had just driven through and as I drove up I looked to the right..couldn't see a thing for miles out my window...ie NOTHING on the side of the road!! Just the couple thousand foot drop into the canyon!! That was a quick glance!! I kept looking ahead to find that the road literally just disappeared into thin air! Blue sky to the right, left and straight ahead on the road!! Wow!! that was a steep decline from there!
Drove through the canyonlands to a vista which had a sign pointing out a few mountains in the distance! The sign said that the amount of land I was looking at would fit the ENTIRE STATE OF CT!! I was looking at a HUGE piece of land!! Wow!! And the view was fairly clear.

Then I drove on to Capitol Reef National Park in UTAH? Huh? never heard of it? me neither? Why is there a reef in UTAH and what does it have to do with the capitol of anything? Well... It is a huge Ridgeline of uplifted rock that the explorers and pioneers had trouble getting over. Since we were originally a seafaring community they called it a reef since those are impassible when in a boat. Plus it had these huge white domes...hence...Capitol Reef!!
Geologically and esthetically speaking SW UTAH was AWESOME!!! Definitely not safe to have a geologist driving through the area with a camera!! I highly recommend the trip!!
