I hiked the incline again on Saturday..this time with some snow on the ground near the top. We came off the mountain to find a coffin race!! Manitou springs does an annual Halloween parade?? I think? I missed it so that is what it looked like to me.. they were handing out awards for the best coffins..
A different view of Garden of the Gods
Apparently a Cog Railway engineers fiancee from the late 1800s died of Tuberculosis and her dying wish was to be buried at the top of red mtn. So they spent days carrying up the coffin.. 100 years later her remains washed back down the mountain. The local cemetery had an unmarked grave for her and recently a monument was put up and the races began in her honor.....
